Fire Protection/Mitigation and Life Safety Services expected from the Arcata Fire Protection District:

  • Structure Fire (industrial, commercial, residential, agricultural, etc.)
  • Vehicle Fire (RV’s, buses, semi’s and anything else on the roads)
  • Agricultural Equipment Fire (heavy equipment or machinery)
  • Aircraft Fire and Rescue
  • Wildland/Forest Fire
  • Urban Interface firefighting 
  • Chimney Fire
  • Nuisance fires (dumpsters, landscape, mailboxes, etc.)
  • Flammable Liquid/Gas Fire
  • Transformer fire
  • Medical Aid (early defibrillation, administer oxygen and glucose, control bleeding, c-spine immobilization, etc.)
  • Hazardous Materials First Responder
  • Vehicle extrication
  • Aircraft extrication
  • Equipment entrapment
  • Trench rescue
  • Urban Search and Rescue (Building Collapse/High Angle rescue)
  • Over the Bank rescue
  • Elevator rescue
  • Mass Casualty Incidents (bus accident, plane crash)
  • Swift water rescue First Responder
  • Natural Disasters (floods, winds, earthquakes and tsunami)
  • Animal rescue
  • Explosions
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction (white powder found)
  • Assist the Regional Hazmat Team located with decontamination.  
  • Participate in the County and Statewide mutual aid system through CAL FIRE and the Office of Emergency Services (OES).  We routinely provide assistance to local, State, and Federal forest agencies during the often-catastrophic California wildland fire season.

Non-Emergency services expected from the Arcata Fire Protection District:

  • Public fire education to schools, childcare facilities, boy scouts, girl scouts, seniors, etc.
  • Fire extinguisher training
  • Investigate fire alarm activations
  • Investigate Life Line activations
  • Welfare check (R-U-OK Program)
  • Lift Assist for the physically disabled from the floor 
  • Remove entrapped limbs from foreign objects
  • Cut rings and other items stuck on bodies
  • Secure the area when power lines are down
  • Standby for police while they conduct emergency operations
  • Provide ladders, lighting, or tools to police activities
  • Remove body fluids from roads or outdoor areas
  • Water removal
  • Fill sand bags
  • Smoke/odor removal
  • Inspect burn piles
  • Investigate outdoor burn complaints for fire hazards
  • Investigate odor complaints
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Provide emergency lighting to outside agencies
  • Investigate fire cause and origin
  • Conduct Juvenile Fire setter Intervention Program
  • Test smoke detectors and replace unit or battery
  • Investigate carbon monoxide detector activations
  • Investigate natural gas leaks
  • Investigate gasoline spills 
  • Shut off utilities to residences
  • Install Knox Boxes
  • Provide traffic control
  • Participate in the ‘Make-A-Wish’ program
  • Give basic advice regarding electrical, plumbing, gas, heating, and other construction items
  • We’re truly the ‘What If” agency being called for anything that law enforcement doesn’t handle
