About Arcata Fire

The Arcata Fire Protection District (AFPD) serves a dynamic community that covers an area of approximately 63 square miles with a population of 36,000 residents.  The Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating for the Fire District is a class 4 for areas with hydrants and class 8 for areas without hydrants.  This is an excellent rating for a Combination Department and helps keep insurance costs at a respectable rate.

The Fire District boundaries range from Indianola in the south to the area of Crannell to the north.  The west boundary begins 100 yards south of the Samoa Bridge on Hwy 255 and extends east on Highway 299 to the area of 1100 block of Glendale Drive and ¾ of a mile into the community of Fieldbrook.  The Fire District encompasses the city of Arcata, the communities of Bayside, McKinleyville and Manila.  Other out-lying rural areas such as the Arcata Bottoms, West End Road, 4 miles up Fickle Hill and the Jacoby Creek area are also within our coverage zones.  Our District consists of private, City, County, State, and Federal lands containing over 13,000 individual parcels.

The following is a sample broad list of community assets and target hazards located within the Arcata Fire Protection District that must be protected:
